Andrzej Ruszczyński Named Board of Governors Professor of Business
The Rutgers Board of Governors named Distinguished Professor Andrzej Ruszczyński, a global expert in stochastic optimization, as a Board of Governors Professor of Business.
Ruszczyński is part of the management science and information systems faculty at Rutgers Business School-Newark and New Brunswick.
He is acclaimed for his pioneering work in creating the field of risk-averse optimization and optimal control, whose research is based on the theory and numerical methods of decision-making under uncertainty.
In 2018, the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics and the Mathematical Optimization Society awarded Ruszczyński the George B. Dantzig Prize. The prize is awarded every three years to an individual or individuals for research that by its originality, breadth and depth is having a major impact on the field of mathematical optimization.
Ruszczyński is also a fellow of the Institute for Operations Research and the Management Sciences. His influence on the field can be seen in a variety of ways: He is a co-author of Lectures on Stochastic Programming: Modeling and Theory, considered a standard reference in the field, and he is author of Nonlinear Optimization, which is widely used in graduate courses in numerous countries across six continents. He is also an associate editor of several leading academic journals in the field of optimization.
At Rutgers, he has played a major role in raising the quantitative profile of Rutgers Business School through his work to co-design the Business Analytics and Information Technology undergraduate major and as co-author of the highly ranked Master of Quantitative Finance Program.
“This is a great honor for me,” Ruszczyński said. “I am deeply grateful to Rutgers University for the opportunity to pursue my research interests and align them with its mission.”
“I also see this not only as a recognition of my individual efforts but also as a result of the success of Rutgers Business School’s research and education program,” he said.
Ruszczyński’s nomination as Board of Governors Professor of Business was endorsed by Lei Lei, dean of the Rutgers Business School-Newark and New Brunswick, Nancy Cantor, chancellor of Rutgers University-Newark, and Prabhas V. Moghe, executive vice president for academic affairs. It was approved by Rutgers University President Jonathan Holloway.
