A BIG STORY MISSED: THE POSSE COMITATUS AND INSURRECTION ACTS AND THE MAINSTREAM MEDIA

The U.S. Congress, in passing the Defense Authorization Bill last fall, also amended two long-standing laws governing the use of the armed forces and National Guard. Robert Kubey, director of the Center for Media Studies at Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, has conducted research showing that the mainstream news media havent reported on this story, even though the new law is strongly opposed by law enforcement and military associations. His research on the media coverage of these revisions and efforts to undo them has just been published in Extra!, the journal of Fairness and Accuracy in Reporting, and can be found here:

ROBERT KUBEY is a professor of journalism and media studies at Rutgers, and director of the Center for Media Studies. His latest book is Creating Television: Conversations with the People Behind 50 Years of American TV. His other books include Media Literacy in the Information Age and Television and the Quality of Life: How Viewing Shapes Everyday Experience (co-authored with Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi).
