When Jacquelyn Litt arrived at Rutgers University in 2010, she knew she would face a challenge leading a new residential college that would appeal to today’s students while fulfilling the college’s historical mission to advance women’s success.


Building a Community for Women Who Attend College Later in Life

The Mary I. Bunting Program, which bears the name of the Douglass dean who established it in 1959, recognizes the needs of women who wish to complete their undergraduate degrees later in their lives and careers. Approximately 150 women ages 23 to 65 are pursuing their undergraduate degrees this year. 


Rutgers Biomedical Engineering Student Leads Team to Build a Prosthesis for Little Girl’s Hand

Katherine Lau, a junior biomedical engineering major in the Douglass Residential College, got the chance to do something few undergraduates have done: lead a team that created a prosthesis for a 4-year-old girl born with barely developed fingers on her right hand.


Hacking the Gender Gap

Hackhers was the first hackathon event at Rutgers specifically designed for women. Sponsored by the Douglass Project and Women in Computer Science at Rutgers, the hackathon's main goal was to motivate more women to get involved with computer programming.


A New Face for Rutgers Student Government

Kristine Baffo is the first African American, the first woman and the first Douglass Residential College student to hold the position. The senior political science major previously served as a class senator and student representative to the university’s Board of Trustees.


Rutgers Student Named Miss New Jersey 2014

Cierra Kaler-Jones, who studies social work through the School of Arts and Sciences honors program and is a member of the Douglass Residential College, represented New Jersey in the Miss America pageant. Kaler-Jones overcame developmental hip dysplasia to become a dancer and is also on the Rutgers dance team. 


Women of Rutgers’ Africana House Pitch in to Help Poorest Communities of Dominican Republic

Dean Jacquelyn Litt and students poured cement and built walls for a house under construction, taught arts and crafts to the island’s children, toured the cane fields and lived in a facility where local lawyers and other professionals assist Haitians who need documentation.


Douglass Honors Graduate Finds Future in Old Bones

The honors graduate received her Bachelor of Science degree in Evolutionary Anthropology with a concentration in bio-archeology.  She is headed to graduate work at Cambridge University where she hopes to examine medical collections of human skeletal remains and possibly work in Malta.
