What:
The School of Criminal Justice at Rutgers University—Newark will host a talk with Dr. Alice Goffman about her latest book, On the Run: Fugitive Life in an American City (University of Chicago Press, 2014). On the Run documents an immersive study of police practices in a low-income African-American neighborhood in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and their impact on the everyday lives of its residents. While living among and closely tracking a group of young African-American men for six years, Goffman observes and chronicles in On the Run a new system of surveillance and control that ultimately fosters a climate of fear and suspicion within the community and among nuclear and extended family members as well as law enforcement authorities.
