NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Greg Brown, chairman and chief executive officer of Motorola Solutions and a Rutgers alumnus, was elected to serve as chair of the Rutgers Board of Governors at today’s meeting in New Brunswick. He will assume the post July 1 and succeeds Gerald C. Harvey.
Brown, a public governor whose term expires in 2017, had been vice chair of the Board of Governors. He earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Rutgers’ Livingston College in 1982.
Brown joined Motorola in 2003 and was elected to the company’s board of directors in 2007. He became CEO of Motorola in 2008 and led the successful spin-off of the consumer-focused Motorola Mobility in January 2011. He now leads Motorola Solutions, the leading provider of mission critical communications to government and enterprise customers.
Also a member of the Rutgers Board of Trustees, Brown formerly served on the Rutgers University Foundation’s Board of Overseers. He was the keynote speaker at Rutgers’ 246th anniversary commencement in May 2012, where he was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree. Additionally, he was inducted into the Hall of Distinguished Alumni in 2010.
Brown is a proud and longtime supporter of Rutgers. He contributed toward the new recruiting pavilion and welcome center at High Point Solutions Stadium, and supports the Rutgers Psychological Clinic at the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology. In 2012, the board of directors of Motorola Solutions matched an anonymous gift and donated $1.5 million to create the Gregory Q. Brown Endowed Chair in the Rutgers University Department of Cell Biology and Neuroscience.
