Renowned Speaker Chris Herren to Share Personal Story of Overcoming Addiction
Once hyped for his potential success, Chris Herren played NCAA Division I basketball and in the NBA before his career unraveled into a life of addiction and despair.
Rutgers University–Camden will host Herren as he shares his personal story in an intimate presentation, titled “Rebound: The Chris Herren Story,” from 8 to 9:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 15.
The talk, which is free and open to the general public, will be held in the Multi-Purpose Room on the main level of the Campus Center.
Armed with only a microphone and his brutal honesty, Herren will take the audience on his journey growing up in Fall River, Mass., to playing collegiately and professionally, and ultimately to overcoming his addiction to return to a life of sobriety. Along the way, he will address themes of gateway drugs, prescription-drug abuse, drinking and driving, and self-harm. Following his presentation, Herren will field questions from the audience.
With the hope of reaching just one person and making an impact in their life, Herren travels throughout the United States to share his story with professional athletic teams and leagues, including the NBA, NFL, and MLB, universities and colleges, high schools, and community groups. Since 2009, he has spoken to more than 500,000 people nationwide and is thankful for each day that he can share his story to further a message of hope and remind others that it is never too late to start a new chapter in one’s life. His story was documented in the ESPN film “Unguarded.”
