New Brunswick, N.J. Christopher J. Molloy, Ph.D., R.Ph., is taking the helm of Rutgers Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy as he leads the school in the rapidly evolving pharmacy and health care environment of the 21st century.
Rutgers University President Richard L. McCormick announced Molloys appointment, effective Oct. 22, 2007, during the presidents annual address to the Rutgers community Friday, Sept. 28. Molloy will succeed longstanding School of Pharmacy Dean John Colaizzi, who will return to the faculty after his outstanding tenure as dean.
Dr. Molloy possesses vast experience in drug development processes, a broad understanding of New Jerseys pharmaceutical industry and a deep commitment to pharmacy education, McCormick said. Taken together with his achievements in molecular pharmacology, cell biology and drug discovery, these attributes and experience make him the ideal person to lead the Ernest Mario School of Pharmacy into the future.
The School of Pharmacys newest dean comes to Rutgers from Johnson and Johnson Pharmaceutical Research and Development L.L.C., where he served as senior research fellow and team leader in the East Coast Research and Early Development unit. In this capacity, he provided strategic leadership and day-to-day management of a preclinical drug discovery research group, which focused on the molecular mechanisms of inflammation, oncology, fibrosis and pulmonary diseases. He was also discovery project leader for several compounds currently progressing in human clinical trials. Before joining Johnson and Johnson in 2003, Molloy held positions with 3-Dimensional Pharmaceuticals Inc. and the Bristol-Myers Squibb Pharmaceutical Research Institute. He has been a New Jersey Registered Pharmacist since 1977.

| Molloy returns to the school where, in 1977, he received a bachelor of science degree in pharmacy. In 1987, he earned a joint doctoral degree in toxicology from Rutgers University Graduate School and the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey-Rutgers Medical School (now UMDNJ-Robert Wood Johnson Medical School). Subsequently, he was a post-doctoral fellow at the National Cancer Institute, National Institutes of Health. I am very excited to return to Rutgers, with its many advanced scientific research departments and a strong pharmacy school so strategically positioned in the heart of New Jerseys pharmaceutical industry, Molloy said. I am looking forward to leveraging these advantages as our schools educational and research mission in health care evolves over the coming decade. Molloy has a distinguished history marked by discoveries in biochemistry and cellular/molecular biology, and leadership in drug discovery and structure-based drug design. As a research scientist in academia, federal agencies and industry, he has made significant contributions to the study of receptor pharmacology, growth factors and molecular mechanisms of signal transduction that resulted in extensive publications in scientific journals as well as issued patents. |
