Rutgers University–Camden’s Office of Civic Engagement and its Ignite program, and the Rutgers–Camden Center for the Arts, will host a celebration of North Camden students’ artwork from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, June 15, to Thursday, June 18. A special closing reception will be held at 5 p.m. Thursday, June 18. Light refreshments will be served.

The showcase and closing reception, which are free of charge and open to the public, will be held in the Stedman Gallery, located in the Fine Arts Complex on Third Street, between Cooper Street and the Benjamin Franklin Bridge on the Rutgers–Camden campus.

Through the Ignite afterschool programs, as well as artist-in-residence programs through the Rutgers–Camden Center for the Arts, students from North Camden schools have created incredible pieces in a variety of media, including drawing, painting, bookmaking, sculpture, textiles, and papermaking.

Participating schools are Camden Community Charter School, Cooper’s Poynt School, Master Charter School’s North Camden Elementary, Rafael Cordero (R.C.) Molina Elementary School, and Pyne Poynt Middle School.

“I am so amazed at the extraordinary job that they did,” says Miranda Powell, program assistant for arts education and community arts for the Rutgers–Camden Center for the Arts. “We watched them complete their projects throughout the year, but seeing their creations on the wall really elevates their art to a new level.”

Powell notes that many of the students have visited the Stedman Gallery before, viewing and discussing professional artists’ work as part of the Museum Education Program at the Rutgers–Camden Center for the Arts. Consequently, she says, this visit will be extra special.

“For them to see their own work displayed, and to show it off to their families, friends, and the community – that sense of pride will be overwhelming,” says Powell.
