Rutgers Law–Newark Alumni Association to Honor Anthony Coscia, Judge William Martini, and Judge Rudy Coleman at Oct. 22 Awards Dinner
Newark, NJ – At its Annual Alumni Recognition Dinner, to be held Wednesday, October 22, 2008 at the Hilton at Short Hills, the Alumni Association of Rutgers School of Law–Newark will celebrate the achievements of Anthony R. Coscia, a partner and member of the executive committee of Windels Marx Lane & Mittendorf LLP and chair of the board of commissioners of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey; the Honorable William J. Martini, U.S. District Court Judge for the District of New Jersey; and the Honorable Rudy B. Coleman, Judge of the Appellate Division, Superior Court of New Jersey. Coscia and Judge Martini will each receive a Distinguished Alumnus Award and Judge Coleman will receive the Fannie Bear Besser Award for Public Service.
The dinner will also celebrate the 100th anniversary of the law school and honor Stuart L. Deutsch’s final year as Dean.
Coscia, Class of 1984, practices in the area of corporate, financial, and real estate transactions. As chair of the Port Authority board of commissioners since April 2003, he has broad oversight responsibility for the agency’s transportation businesses and $5.9 billion annual capital and operating budget. From February 1992 to March 2003, Coscia was chair of the New Jersey Economic Development Authority. He is a trustee of the New Jersey Network Foundation, New Jersey Community Development Corporation, and the Liberty Science Center Foundation, and a member of the Partnership for New York City and the New Jersey Performing Arts Center council of trustees.
Judge Martini, Class of 1972, has served on the U.S. District Court, sitting in Newark, since November 2002. He began his legal career in the Hudson County prosecutor’s office. The following year, he was named an assistant U.S. attorney for the District of New Jersey, holding that position until joining his family’s law firm in 1977. He entered politics and won election to the Clifton City Council in 1990 and became a Passaic County freeholder in 1992. In 1994, he was elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, becoming the first Republican to win an election in the 8th congressional district since 1958. In 1999, he was appointed to head the Port Authority, a position he held until becoming U.S. District Court judge.
Judge Coleman, Class of 1974, had been a partner at Carpenter, Bennett & Morrissey before he was appointed to the Superior Court in 1995. He has served in the Family, Civil and Criminal Divisions in the Union County vicinage. He was assigned to the Appellate Division effective August 2003. Judge Coleman has been a member of several Supreme Court committees, including the Commission on the Rule of Professional Conduct, the Disciplinary Oversight Committee, the Commission on Professionalism in the Law, and the Vicinage Advisory Committee on Minority Concerns.
