First time Air Force ceremony is scheduled at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – More than 30 members of Rutgers’ Class of 2012 will be commissioned second lieutenants Monday, May 14 after completing their Army and Air Force ROTC training programs and taking oaths to protect America.
Twenty members of the Army program, including nine who will complete their requirements over the summer, will be sworn into service before friends and family at the 3 p.m. ceremony at the Rutgers Student Center, 126 College Ave. in New Brunswick. David Christian, a highly decorated Vietnam veteran and a candidate in the 2012 Republican primary for a U.S. Senate seat from Pennsylvania, will be speaker. He is a 2011 graduate of Rutgers School of Law-Camden.
For the first time, 11 new second lieutenants from Rutgers’ Air Force ROTC program will be commissioned at the base theater at Joint Base McGuire-Dix-Lakehurst, N.J. Maj. Gen. William J. Bender, commander, U.S. Air Force Expeditionary Center at the joint base, will speak during the 2 p.m. ceremony.
In September, Rutgers will launch a Naval ROTC program, the only one in New Jersey.
