Rutgers offers 13 summer courses in Point Pleasant Beach and Wildwood
NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. – Rutgers University-New Brunswick’s Summer Session will again reach out to Jersey Shore aficionados looking to advance their education with 13 courses for academic credit in its second “RU at the Shore” season. Fifty-nine students enrolled in inaugural RU at the Shore classes last summer.
Rutgers will offer courses in Point Pleasant Beach and Wildwood, a new location for 2016. All shore classes will be conducted in a hybrid format, combining in-class and online learning experiences, beginning June 27. Registration continues through June 1. Late registration (with late fee) continues through June 24.
In Point Pleasant Beach, students can choose two new six-week psychology courses, “Positive Psychology” and “Quantitative Methods.” They also can select from among four-week courses: “Facilitating Effective Meetings,” “Introduction to Finance,” “Introduction to Management,” “Introduction to Managerial Accounting,” “Introduction to Oceanography,” “Marketing for Entrepreneurs and Small Businesses,” “Principles of Leadership” and “Writing for Business and the Professions.” Classes are scheduled at Antrim Elementary School.
“Sound and Culture of the Blues, “Special Topics in Marketing: Global Marketing” and “The American Detective in Fiction and Film” each four weeks long, will be held at Wildwood High School.
RU at the Shore was launched in summer 2015 following a survey of more than 4,500 undergraduates; 1,200 students (about 27 percent) indicated they would spend time along the 130-mile coastline and would be interested in taking classes for credit.
One of the largest summer programs in the country, Rutgers-New Brunswick Summer Session offers more than 2,400 course sections in 250 fields to help students fulfill core or major/minor requirements, as well as internships and research and travel-study opportunities. More than 14,000 students are expected to register, including visitors from other colleges and universities here and abroad. Most courses are held on the New Brunswick/Piscataway campus, although students can choose from a wide selection of online subjects.
Also new for 2016 from New Brunswick Summer Session is the inaugural Rutgers Pre-Engineering Summer Academy, a weeklong residential program for pre-college students to explore engineering fields.
New Brunswick Summer Session will again hold its Summer Scholars Program for high school students interested in getting a jump on their college education and the College Board-endorsed Advanced Placement Summer Institute for high school teachers, which prepares instructors to teach advanced placement courses.
Rutgers-New Brunswick Summer Session is part of the Rutgers Division of Continuing Studies, which focuses on lifelong learning needs and opportunities. Serving all Rutgers campuses, the division offers hundreds of credit and noncredit programs, with thousands of participants from youth to retirees. Continuing Studies also provides educational support services combining pedagogy and technology, including instructional design and course management systems for online, face-to-face and hybrid learning environments.
