New Brunswick, N.J. The Rutgers University community will get its first look at updated plans for the greening of the College Avenue Campus at an information session Monday evening, Oct. 15. The design team of TEN Arquitectos and Wallace Roberts & Todd will present preliminary designs for phase one of the project.

The information session, which will include a presentation and a question-and-answer period, is open to the public. The program begins at 6 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room of the Rutgers Student Center at 126 College Avenue in New Brunswick.

A Vision for the College Avenue Campus is a key component of President Richard L. McCormicks Campus and Community initiative, which seeks to enhance the learning environment, strengthen Rutgers ties with its host communities and create a state university that is a major source of pride for New Jersey.

A beautiful state university campus offers a powerful attraction for prospective faculty and students, McCormick said, and it provides a sense of place that connects the university more closely to the people we serve. In this initial phase, we seek to provide a greener, more pedestrian-friendly environment by creating welcoming and aesthetically pleasing public spaces on the College Avenue Campus.

Rutgers has committed $15 million to the first phase of this project.

In February 2005, President McCormick announced A New Vision for the College Avenue Campus in partnership with New Brunswick mayor James Cahill. Through a design competition, Rutgers asked some of the worlds best-known architects, landscape architects and planners to present thought-provoking concepts for the universitys consideration.

In December 2006, the president selected the winning team, noting that we will place priority on those elements of the plan that can be accomplished soon, such as making the public and pedestrian spaces more attractive and appealing.

TEN Arquitectos and Wallace Roberts & Todd anticipate presenting a final phase one landscaping design plan to the university by the end of the year and work may begin in 2008.
