An estimated 17,729 graduates will receive degrees from Rutgers this year. They include approximately 11,423 baccalaureate degrees, 4,555 master’s degrees, 1,750 doctorates (including professional doctorates), one specialist of education degree and two artist diplomas. Since its founding in 1766, Rutgers has awarded 568,128 academic degrees (excluding the 2017 estimated total).

Honorary Degrees:
Rutgers University-New Brunswick will present honorary degrees to Steven Van Zandt (Doctor Fine Arts), the keynote speaker at commencement, and to Harvey J. Makadon (Doctor of Science), LGBTQ and HIV health care advocate and professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School.
Rutgers-University Newark will present honorary degrees to Eboo Patel (Doctor of Humane Letters), the keynote speaker at commencement, and Arthur James Hicks (Doctor of Science). Patel is chief executive officer of the global, nonprofit organization Interfaith Youth Core and is widely considered to be among the most influential global leaders in interfaith relations. Hicks is program director of the National Science Foundation’s Louis Stokes Alliance for Minority Participation.
Rutgers University-Camden will present an honorary degree to Carla D. Hayden (Doctor of Humane Letters), the keynote speaker at commencement. Hayden is the first woman and the first African American to serve as the U.S. Librarian of Congress.
General Information:
This is Rutgers University-New Brunswick’s seventh commencement at High Point Solutions Stadium and fourth since the integration with UMDNJ in July 2013. It is the fifth presided over by President Robert Barchi, whose tenure as Rutgers’ 20th president officially began in September 2012.
Students from Rutgers Biomedical and Health Sciences (http://commencement.rutgers.edu/rbhs-convocations) participate in the Rutgers-New Brunswick commencement, although some individual schools hold convocations in Newark.
The School of Arts and Sciences will hold its convocation in High Point Solutions Stadium at 12:30 p.m. following the Rutgers-New Brunswick commencement. Academic departments should be contacted for information about individual receptions. The remaining schools and colleges will hold convocations or receptions. The schedule follows.
