Women Scholars, Scientists, Business and Government Leaders Plan Action to Bring More Women into Science

WHO: Dr. Nancy Snyderman of NBC News; Joan Bennett, Rutgers vice president for the promotion of women in science, engineering and mathematics; Pamela Stone, professor at Hunter College and author of Opting Out? Why Women Really Quit Careers and Head Home; Kathryn Uhrich, professor of chemistry at Rutgers; Laura Brooks, vice president, risk management and chief risk officer at PSE&G; and other scholars, scientists, business and government leaders
BACKGROUND: The science and technology sector is a major driver of New Jerseys economy, yet women are still underrepresented in this workforce. Representatives from education (teachers, administrators and counselors), government and policymaking, industry and community organizations with a vested interest in advancing women in these fields will gather for a one-day discussion of how to strengthen the states economy by boosting womens interest and participation in science and technology. This summit is sponsored by Rutgers Office for the Promotion of Women in Science, Engineering and Mathematics; the Rutgers Center for Women and Work, and the New Jersey Council on Gender Parity in Labor and Education. The summaries of the discussions will be published.
